Searching the Cowlitz County Court Docket
Start with the court level, because that decides where the Cowlitz County court docket lives. For Superior Court case information, the public route is Odyssey Portal. The Cowlitz County District Court Defendant Access portal serves the other side. It handles eligible limited-jurisdiction searches along with payments. Washington Courts rounds things out with statewide tools for names, cases, attorneys, and court dates. But the index only goes so far. A pleading, certified order, or complete electronic docket has to come from the right clerk.
Write down the case number first. Then the court level, party spelling, filing year, and case type. One common name can pull up dozens of records across a docket search. So follow the tightest order:
- Decide whether the matter belongs to Superior Court, District Court, a contracted municipal docket, an appellate court, or federal court.
- Search the matching public system by case number when known; otherwise use a party name and filters.
- Compare file date, type, location, and party fields before opening a result.
- Read Events, Disposition Events, and Hearings as separate parts of the register of actions.
- Confirm the current date or official result with the Cowlitz County clerk or court.
Two Cowlitz County Docket Portals
There is no single front door for Cowlitz County dockets. Superior Court records sit inside Odyssey Smart Search. It lets you filter by county, case type, status, filing dates, judicial officer, party, attorney, and case number. Anonymous visitors get public case information. Odyssey makes no promise of public document images, though, and the clerk decides who holds registered access. Limited jurisdiction is different. Defendant Access belongs to Cowlitz County District Court alone. It takes a citation number, driver license, or name for eligible matters, sometimes with payment functions. Treat it as a lookup tool rather than an archive. When the judgment, citation, no-contact order, or electronic docket you need fails to appear there, fall back on the District Court records process.
The official Odyssey screen shows the statewide Superior Court entry point:

That screen locates cases. It is not a certified copy of the Cowlitz County court docket.
Inside a Cowlitz County Court Docket
A court docket is the running history of a case through the court system. Washington tools may break it into Events, Disposition Events, Hearings, or general case information. Entries tell you what was filed, when the court set a matter, and whether a ruling event was entered. One caution applies. They do not prove every document is open online.
| Case number | The court identifier used to match the file and request copies. |
|---|---|
| File date and type | When the matter began and its broad court category. |
| Location | The court tied to the record, not always the next hearing room. |
| Events | Filed items and procedural steps recorded in sequence. |
| Disposition events | Entries tied to outcomes; verify the signed order. |
| Hearings | Past or future settings, subject to local schedule changes. |
Read entries with care. A charge is not a conviction, a listed setting does not prove the hearing happened, and a status is not a certified disposition. For the official document, turn to the Cowlitz County Clerk of Superior Court.
Cowlitz County Searches Need Filters
Odyssey can cut off results at 200 records. A common last name alone will drown you. Add Cowlitz as the location, then narrow with case type, status, filing dates, or judicial officer. The official guide supports wildcard and Soundex tools too. But check any loose match against its file date and case number before trusting it. Search Hearings works separately. It has its own controls for hearing type, date range, courtroom, attorney, and judicial officer.
| Field | Best use | Check next |
|---|---|---|
| Case number | Direct match to a known matter | Court and file year |
| Party name | Start when no number is known | File date, type, location |
| Hearing dates | Upcoming Cowlitz County settings | Daily schedule and room |
| Judicial officer | Narrow a calendar list | Current assignment |
The statewide search itself warns that information may lag, drop links, or show an inaccurate status. So use it to locate a case. Then verify against the local docket and the clerk record.
Courts That Keep Dockets in Cowlitz County
Cowlitz County Superior Court is the broad trial court. Its dockets cover felonies, larger civil and real-property matters, domestic cases, probate, guardianship, adoption, dependency, juvenile offender matters, commitments, administrative appeals, and appeals from the courts of limited jurisdiction. Cowlitz County District Court takes the rest: misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, civil claims within statutory authority, traffic cases, and other infractions.
| Court | Docket covers | Search route |
|---|---|---|
| Cowlitz County Superior Court | Felony, major civil, family, probate, juvenile, appeals | Odyssey, state search, Superior Clerk |
| Cowlitz County District Court | Misdemeanor, infraction, limited civil, city cases | Defendant Access, state search, District records |
| Washington Court of Appeals, Division II | Appeals from Cowlitz County Superior Court | State appellate resources |
| Federal courts | Federal civil, criminal, and bankruptcy | PACER and federal clerks |
A federal case never becomes a county case just because the event happened in Cowlitz County. The Western District of Washington runs on federal systems. State trial records stay with Cowlitz County courts.
Cowlitz County Cases Share Kelso
Five cities share one county court. Castle Rock, Kalama, Kelso, Longview, and Woodland all contract with Cowlitz County District Court for municipal court service. The state Court Directory points each city back to that court. So one matter can carry three labels: the issuing city, the county court running it, and Kelso as the physical site.
The Hall of Justice holds the main District Court route and the Superior Clerk. Still, not every hearing lands there. Criminal dockets may use the jail courtroom. Juvenile matters go to the Juvenile Services Center. Other settings can land in the Administration Building, a hospital site, or a virtual room. Court level and daily assignment matter more than city name.
Local routing point: A city citation can belong to a municipal docket administered through Cowlitz County District Court.
How to Find Court Dates and Settings
For current Superior Court settings, the Cowlitz County Daily Court Schedule and Zoom page is the operational source. Find the hearing, note the judicial officer. Then use that officer's room or approved remote link. Assignments shift. Trial users are told to check after 5:00 p.m. the day before. Check again each day of a multi-day trial.
Odyssey Search Hearings can locate a Superior Court date by case, party, attorney, officer, courtroom, and date range. Washington's Find My Court Date offers a statewide start. For District Court, read the current calendar or virtual-court notice. Then call the court when the online route is unclear. A clerk-counter check works too, during current hours.
Parse each setting as fields: court level, case number, calendar name, date, start time, officer, room, and whether it runs in person or remote. Remember that a stream is only an observation route. It is not the official recording and may not be copied or rebroadcast.
Cowlitz County Readiness Dockets Matter
A general search result is rarely the final word on a trial. Cowlitz County criminal rules schedule a readiness review during the week before trial. The court hands down final instructions there. It sets the start time too. Miss it, and the court can strike the trial date and impose sanctions. Civil cases run through the Universal Readiness Docket on the Tuesday before trial week.
Civil matters need one more caution. A settled case does not disappear from the Cowlitz County court calendar on its own. Nothing drops off without a signed Order of Cancellation. That is how a stale docket entry and the real schedule end up disagreeing. Confirm the readiness event before trusting a trial date. Pull the latest order, and check the daily calendar.
Docket path: Initial setting › readiness docket › room check › hearing or trial › result entered.
Public Access to Court Dockets
Washington court rules open with a promise of public access. Public, though, does not mean every page sits online. General Rule 31 covers this. Anyone can view an open court record at the courthouse for free. Fees can attach to copies, certification, recordings, searches, delivery, and archive work. Anonymous Odyssey users see public case information but generally cannot open documents.
Cowlitz County access rules:
General Rule 31 governs public access to case records.
General Rule 22 limits access to specified family, protection, guardianship, health, financial, and personal records.
General Rule 15 governs sealing, redaction, and destruction.
General Rule 31.1 covers administrative records, not case files.
Juvenile and sealed cases often stay off the list. One line of a calendar may be public while a filing or an identity stays restricted. Ask the court about rule-based access. Never try to work around a restriction.
Cowlitz County System Changes
Cowlitz County District Court moved onto Enterprise Justice Court in June 2026. A state technology request authorized the related e-filing work in July. The change replaces older DISCIS and JIS functions. Public search, Defendant Access, e-documents, payments, and filing tools will not all switch on the same day.
Keep a fallback ready. Read the current District Court notice. Hold a paper copy of anything important. Call or visit the counter when a portal goes down. The November 2024 Washington Courts network incident knocked out electronic searches and payments for a stretch. Paper filing and urgent work continued in person. That episode is history now. It explains why a Cowlitz County search should never depend on one site.
Note: Verify current District Court software, hours, payment options, and filing instructions before sending material or visiting the counter.
Docket Records at the Clerk's Office

The counter sits at 312 SW 1st Avenue, Room 233, Kelso, WA 98626. Hours run weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The number machine is pulled at 4:15 p.m. Call 360-577-3016.

Use the specific Search Request Forms route for case documents, recordings, or appellate recordings.
The document request form is picky. It wants one case number per request. It also needs the case title and type, the document title or sub-number, and the order or filing date. Delivery can come by email, pickup, or mail. A Dropbox link dies after 14 days, so save the file right away. Ordinary email never substitutes for a filing method the rules authorize.
Cowlitz County Files Beyond Portals
A portal event list and a clerk file are different products. The Superior Court file can hold exhibits, minutes, and pleadings. It also holds signed orders, judgments, and recordings. District Court requests may cover citations, dispositions, no-contact orders, guilty pleas, and electronic dockets. Which form you use depends on the court.
- Docket or register of actions
- The chronological list of recorded events.
- Certified copy
- A copy carrying the clerk's certification.
- Disposition
- A recorded resolution; verify it with the order.
- Continuance
- A court-approved move to a later date.
For a full request, follow the Cowlitz County court record search instructions. A judgment or a recording is not part of the county's normal Public Records Act process.
The official Cowlitz County Court Records page lays out the local routes the clerk accepts.

Those routes tie the public index to the office that can hand you the actual record.
Cowlitz County Docket Counts in Context
Annual reports count different things. A filing is not a hearing. A non-trial proceeding is not a new case, and a limited-court charge disposed is neither a conviction nor a headcount of unique people. For 2025, Washington reported 4,783 Cowlitz County Superior Court filings and, separately, 20,098 charges disposed in Cowlitz District Court.
The figures measure workload only. They say nothing about the pace or result of one case, so track your matter through its current docket and orders.
Cowlitz County Court Dockets by City
Each of the five incorporated cities has its own name and story. Their municipal cases still converge on Cowlitz County District Court. Every city page keeps the place of origin clear while pointing to the shared search, record, and calendar channels.
Longview Docket Search
District Court handles city cases; the Violations Bureau has a narrow role.
Kelso Docket Search
The county seat and Hall of Justice form the main court hub.
Woodland Docket Search
Current records route to District Court despite the historic municipal code.
Kalama Docket Search
The former county seat now routes city cases to Kelso.
Castle Rock Docket Search
A Castle Rock citation can use a Kelso courtroom.
By 2020 Census population, the order runs Longview, Kelso, Woodland, Kalama, then Castle Rock. Rank changes nothing about who keeps the record.
Washington and Cowlitz County Searches
Not sure which court holds the Cowlitz County case you want? The Washington Courts Name and Case Search covers that gap. It spans municipal, district, superior, and appellate courts. Person, attorney, and court-date paths are all there. Its results can lag or drop links. Some entries show a status the county has not confirmed. So treat it as a locator, not the file itself. For the official docket, contact the Cowlitz County clerk or District Court.
The official statewide search screen shows how that locator looks.

Use a statewide result to pin down the court and case number. Then return to the right Cowlitz County channel. Washington also sells JIS-Link, a fee-based docket subscription. Its charges are not Cowlitz County Clerk copy fees. It never replaces a certified record. The free search plus local verification is the sound public sequence.
